Upon Vinka’s decision to embark on a singing career, her superiors at Swangz Avenue presented her with straightforward and unvarnished truths.
Before delving into the world of singing, Vinka served as Ntale’s manager, who, at the time, was signed under the record label owned by Benon Mugumbya and Julius Kyazze. Reflecting on her journey, Vinka shared insights from her bosses at Swangz Avenue with Crystal Newman, stating, “They told me two things—you might start out well, you might start out badly… So you have to be ready for everything. I was ready for anything, good or bad. I just had to go in.”
She revealed this when Newman inquired whether she anticipated the challenges of a hectic singing career when she first launched into the music industry.
Vinka attributes her success to “my tenacity and the tenacity of my team.”
Vinka, born Veronica Nakiyingi Lugya, grew up in Kazo, Kawempe, and Bweyogerere. Her educational journey took her through Hormisdallen Schools (Kamwokya), Rubaga Girls’ Secondary School, and Makerere University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Tourism Administration in 2017.
During her time in A-Level, she served as an entertainment prefect and discovered her passion for dancing and singing. In her S.6 vacation, she participated in the HotSteps dancing competition with friends, ultimately winning. Her professional journey began as a dancer for Jackie Chandiru. However, when Chandiru fell ill, Vinka started contemplating leaving the dance scene.
She initially performed at Buzz Events, owned by Swangz Avenue, and also danced for the late Sera, an artist under the same label. It was through this association that she crossed paths with Julius Kyazze. Kyazze extended an offer for her to work as an artiste manager, a role she accepted.
While still pursuing her university studies, she balanced this position with her part-time work for Jackie Chandiru. However, a moment of decision arose when Chandiru asked her to choose between continuing to work with her and managing Irene Ntale. She opted to work with Ntale.
In 2015, Swangz Avenue was in need of a dancehall artist, and she was tasked with scouting for one. Alongside this, she engaged in jingles and voice-overs for the record label, which produced advertisements for various organizations.
After completing her studies in 2016, she volunteered to try her hand at becoming a dancehall singer. The collaboration resulted in her recording “Level,” her debut single. Subsequent releases included “Overdose,” “Malaika,” and “Love Doctor.”
According to Vinka, “Malaika” was the song that instilled in her the confidence that she had finally achieved success as a singer.
In October 2016, she stepped away from artiste management and fully committed herself to singing in February 2017.
