Busoga Queen Inhebantu Jovia Mutesi delighted attendees at her wedding reception by sharing the story of how she crossed paths with her husband, Monarch Wilberforce Nadipe Gabula IV. According to her, their encounter happened serendipitously during the early stages of her university education.
At the time, she was a freshman at Makerere University, where she found herself enrolled in a course she did not particularly like. Amidst the confusion and contemplation of whether to pursue the course or follow her heart, she fortuitously met the Busoga King.
Jovia explained that her introduction to Gabula occurred through her brothers, who were acquainted with him. The two quickly formed a friendship that blossomed into a romantic relationship. Below is an edited excerpt from the queen’s speech at her wedding:
“Dear guests, in your respective capacities, we are thrilled to have you here.
God is consistently good.
With immense joy and as part of this celebration, I extend a warm welcome to each one of you here at Igenge Palace.
Today marks a special day in the Obwakyabazinga and in our lives, symbolizing the triumph of our unity, development, and culture, as we reflect on how we collaborated to make this momentous occasion a reality.”
My father touched upon my CV, yet he left it incomplete. After leaving Namagunga, I enrolled at Makerere, where they assigned me to study Economics. However, I felt that it wasn’t aligned with my true passion. Given my family’s strong background in accountancy, I desired to pursue Accounting and Finance.
Amid this confusion, I sought guidance from two of my brothers, Eric and Bob, who had previously studied in Malaysia and had encountered the King. Faced with the dilemma of choosing between Nkozi and staying at Makerere, the person I turned to was the King. He, having studied economics himself, advised me to pursue accounting and finance if that was my true inclination.
I followed his counsel, studied at Nkozi, passed, and upon my achievement, he expressed gratitude and whispered words that formed the beginning of our close bond. I am grateful to God for the confusion, as it led me to meet him, making him my best friend.
Following his proposal, he decided to return to school for his Ph.D., and subsequently, I also chose to join him. Currently, I am pursuing my master’s degree in Finance and Accounting.
I extend my heartfelt thanks to all those who supported us. Special gratitude to the individuals who showered us with love along the way, especially the youths and women we encountered on our journey to the church. Your overwhelming love left me speechless this morning, and I am truly thankful for it.
I pledge to be a nurturing mother to you, helping you grow into a fruitful forest in line with our responsibilities. I am thankful for the opportunity presented by this marriage and express my gratitude to everyone who contributed to this celebration.
A sincere thank you to both our families. Your love from the moment you laid eyes on me means a lot, and I appreciate it deeply.
In conclusion, allow me to kneel and express my gratitude to Baba for his love and unwavering support, for fulfilling every promise. I am profoundly grateful and commit to not letting you down. I will strive to make you the happiest man, and our homes in Igenge, Buziga, and Budhumbula shall be filled with joy and love!
As we journey together, I hope our unity doesn’t end with this wedding. I promise to serve with courage as your queen.
