Winnie Nwagi has expressed her continued reliance on Swangz Avenue to maintain her success in the music industry. When questioned about rumors suggesting her departure from the label that has managed her music for nearly a decade during an appearance on NBS After 5, Nwagi responded, “There are those who come and tell me, ‘Why don’t you leave? I feel you can manage without a label.’ Blah blah blah. There are many advisors out there!”
Addressing the notion of managing without a label, Nwagi stated, “Personally, I don’t think I can. These things appear to be easy, but they are not. I can’t handle the music business on my own.” She highlighted the importance of seeking support from those who understand the business, drawing parallels with her early career when she participated in Coca-Cola Rated Next to find someone to kickstart her journey.
Nwagi compared her situation to that of married women who are persuaded to leave their marriages, only for the person convincing them to abandon them once the divorce is finalized. Winnie Nwagi was discovered by Benon Mugumbya, a co-founder of Swangz Avenue, when she emerged as the second runner-up in the second season of Coca-Cola Rated Next in 2014. Mugumbya, who was a judge in the competition, played a pivotal role in her career.
In 2016, Nwagi released her first song titled “Embela,” followed by “Gwenonya.” The breakthrough came with “Musawo,” produced by the late Danz Kumapeesa, in the same year. Since then, she has released several chart-topping songs, and in 2022, she hosted one of the most highly attended concerts in recent history at Lugogo Cricket Oval in Kampala.
