Vampino, previously part of the well-known singing duo Benon and Vamposs that dominated Uganda’s music scene from the early 2000s until 2008 when they pursued solo careers, is a prominent reggae and dancehall artist hailing from Uganda. Born Elvis Kirya, he delved into acting with his debut in Nana Kagga’s film “The Life.” Notably, he is also the brother of the renowned musician Maurice Kirya.
Initially associated with Swangz Avenue in the early stages of his music journey, Vampino eventually opted for a solo career, departing from the record label. He emerged from a musical family, with his mother, the late Sophia Baguma, nurturing his early passion for music. Vampino’s upbringing included learning folk songs and traditional tunes around the fire during power outages.
Vampino’s musical trajectory saw him achieving acclaim as part of Benon and Vamposs, producing hits like “Mumulete” and “I Know.” After Vamposs transitioned to a solo career, Vampino rebranded himself and shifted towards reggae and dancehall genres, producing successful singles like “Kwekunyakunya” and collaborating with artists such as Juliana and Cindy Sanyu.
Beyond music, Vampino ventured into the film industry, showcasing his versatility as an actor. He has notably appeared in various movies, including the 2012 release “The Life,” where he portrayed Smokey Luciano.
Throughout his career, Vampino has received several awards and nominations, including accolades from Kisima Music Awards and Hipipo Music Awards. Additionally, his discography boasts hits like “Nsazewo,” “Tell It” featuring Radio and Weasel, and “Kuwaako.”
In his personal life, Vampino is a father of two children. His relationship history includes a previous partnership with Suzan Owori, with whom he shares a son named Kirya Jacob Zion. However, they eventually parted ways, and Vampino is now married to Lydia Namakula.
Despite his success, Vampino has faced controversies, including altercations with fellow artists like Chameleon and legal disputes concerning child custody with Suzan Owori. These challenges have punctuated his journey, but Vampino continues to leave his mark on Uganda’s music and entertainment landscape.
