Suuna Ben, also known by his moniker Owebinyanyanya, is a highly esteemed Ugandan mixtape DJ, revered radio and TV presenter, media personality, emcee, and host of radio and television programs at Bukedde, a prominent brand under Vision Group.
Early Life and Education:
Suuna Ben was born in Masaka District, specifically in Kimanya Village, and hails from the Muganda ethnicity. He is the second child among seven siblings, his father, Kayondo John, passed away during his third year of primary school, leaving his mother, Namata Proscovia, to raise the family. Suuna Ben began his education at Kimanya Nursery School and later attended Kimanya Primary School. Following his father’s death, financial constraints forced him to switch to Kijabwene Primary School until completing his primary education.
Due to financial difficulties, Suuna Ben enrolled in Masaka Technical Institute to study motor vehicle mechanics, though he lacked passion for the subject. After trying various odd jobs, including selling music tapes, he found his calling in DJ work, following his father’s legacy.
After a hiatus, Suuna Ben resumed formal education through a scholarship at Drumbeat, a music and dance group, and enrolled at Exodus Vocational School in Nyendo with aspirations of becoming an electrical engineer. However, due to missed exams caused by a performance trip to Sweden, he faced setbacks, leading to a change in schools. Despite challenges, he completed both O’ Level and A’ Level at Stella Maris School.
During his schooling, Suuna Ben engaged in karaoke to support his studies, later transitioning to radio work, starting with Radio Equator and eventually joining Buddu FM, where his talent was recognized and embraced.
Career and Experience:
Suuna Ben’s career at Bukedde Radio and Television, owned by the Ugandan government through Vision Group, propelled him to fame. He hosts programs such as Bukedde Butya on Bukedde FM and ‘Oluyimba Lwo’ on Bukedde TV 1. His rise to prominence saw him organize successful concerts, including one at Joogies Recreation Centre Bulenga, featuring him and radio presenter Mbazira Tonny. Notably, he hosted Fireboy’s concert at Cricket Oval in Kampala, elevating his status as a household name in Uganda.
Other Ventures:
In addition to his media career, Suuna Ben co-owns Streamline Avenue with his partner, Mbazira Tonny, and operates a salon business.
