Namata Ruth Kiwuulo Mbabazi, widely recognized by her stage name Princess Amirah, is a Ugandan musician, singer, and songwriter who rose to prominence in 2013 with hit songs like “Ensonga” and “Asookya.”
Born in Mityana, a town in Uganda’s Central region within the Mubende district, Princess Amirah pursued her early education in Mityana, attending Mityana Modern Secondary School for her O-level studies. Due to financial constraints, she transferred to St. Charles Secondary School, where she completed her studies up to senior four. Unfortunately, financial challenges forced her to discontinue her education during mock exams.
Faced with the need to chart her path after leaving school, Princess Amirah took on odd jobs to sustain herself. She found employment in restaurants, particularly as a dishwashing staff member, earning 1,000 shillings per day. Simultaneously, she pursued her passion for songwriting during her free time.
Determined to monetize her songwriting talent, Princess Amirah made a bold move to Kampala, Uganda’s capital city, with savings from her restaurant job. However, she encountered challenges in selling her songs as she lacked connections in the music industry and studio access.
Undeterred, she sought familiar work in restaurants, serving food and washing dishes. While holding down these jobs, she explored other opportunities, including selling clothes and stationery, utilizing her earnings to venture into the music business.
Princess Amirah’s pivotal moment came when she met Ugandan musician Chris Evans, who introduced her to her current manager, overseeing her music career. With a catalog that includes notable songs like “Ensonga” and “Asookya,” Princess Amirah stands as an inspiration, particularly for young girls aspiring to enter the music industry. Her journey reflects resilience, resourcefulness, and a determined pursuit of her musical dreams.
