You cannot recount the history of Uganda’s music industry without acknowledging the significant role Kenya played in its development. In the earlier stages, before Uganda had a sufficient number of producers and modern studios, many musicians had to travel to Kenya to record their songs. Esteemed Ugandan music legends such as Sammy Kasule, Elly Wamala, Kabuye Semboga, Paul Kafeero, Tony Senkebejje, Billy Mbowa Kawoya, Sammy Kawuma, Jose Chameleone, and Bebe Cool, among others, recorded some of their major projects in Kenya.
For Jose Chameleone, his musical journey took off in Nairobi, where he not only launched his career but also met Dorotia, who not only financed his initial projects but also became the mother of his child. Chameleone’s initial visit to Kenya was at the invitation of Kalamashaka, a Kenyan hip-hop group that intended to collaborate on a song, but the plan fell through. Fortunately, he partnered with Bebe Cool, an established artist in Nairobi, and together, they started recording songs with the assistance of Ogopa Deejays.
Following a fallout, Bebe Cool joined forces with Wyre and Nazizi to establish the East African Bashment Crew, under which they produced hits like ‘Kube,’ ‘This Tune,’ ‘Fire Anthem’ (produced by Magic Washington and Tony Houls), and ‘Combination’ (featuring Peter Miles and Menshan).
Chameleone’s collaboration with Redsan was also recorded by Ogopa Deejays, the same producers behind his breakthrough song “Mama Mia” and “Njo Kalibu.” Ogopa Deejays continued their influence by producing beats for Peter Miles’ breakout track ‘One Time’ (featuring Menshan) and Bebe Cool’s Fitina album.
These collaborations stand as significant milestones in the musical interchange between Uganda and Kenya, contributing to the rich history of East African music.
