Maureen Nantume, a renowned and gifted singer associated with the popular Golden Band, emerged as an Afro-pop music sensation with her hit song “Sili ndogoyi.” Golden Band, an offshoot from Eagles Production, became a pivotal platform for Nantume’s rise to stardom.
Despite a career spanning over a decade, Nantume remains humble and grounded. Born into challenging circumstances, with her mother, Robinah Nakitende, struggling as an onion vendor, Nantume faced financial hardships after her mother’s passing in 1996.
The death of her mother shattered Nantume’s dreams of education, forcing her to drop out of school in 2002 while at Agro-Links in Namasuba. With no known father, some relatives took in her siblings, leaving her alone to navigate life’s challenges.
Undeterred by adversity, Nantume found employment as a housekeeper in Namasuba, earning a monthly salary of Shs15,000. Despite the hardships, she clung to her dream of becoming a renowned singer.
Nantume’s positive outlook on her housekeeping job, affectionately termed “mukomba bookisi” (dish licker) by some, reflects her gratitude towards her past. She acknowledges that being a housemaid paved the way for her entry into the world of fame.
Her boss, recognizing Nantume’s talent, encouraged her to audition for the Eagles Production band, an opportunity that marked the beginning of her musical journey. Overcoming initial fears and insecurities, Nantume impressed the judges with her rendition of “Big Daddy” by Betty Mpologoma, securing a spot in the band.
Joining Eagles’ Production Band in 2003, Nantume contributed as a backup singer for senior band members like Mesarch Ssemakula, Ronald Mayinja, and others. Despite financial struggles, receiving Shs5,000 for each performance, she remained optimistic, knowing that her luck would change.
After three years with Eagles Production, Nantume’s breakthrough came with the song “Sili Ndogoyi,” marking her solo artist debut. The turning point in her financial situation occurred in 2006 when she earned Shs80,000 for a performance at the Nabweru football pitch, a sum that felt like a windfall.
In 2007, Nantume released three songs: “Abakozi Ba Safari,” “Oyitiriza Okungeyengula,” and “Nkwagala nyo,” gaining significant airplay. These songs paved the way for her first well-paying gig at a Kwanjula event, earning Shs400,000. Her career gained momentum, and in 2012, the song “Kiyungu” further solidified her standing in the music industry.
Nantume’s journey from a challenging past to becoming a successful artist reflects resilience, determination, and the transformative power of music in her life.
