GNL Zamba, widely recognized as a prominent figure in Ugandan hip hop, is not just a musician but also a respected influencer and multifaceted individual. He is credited with introducing rap and Lugaflow music to mainstream radio and various media platforms in Uganda.
Ernest Nsimbi, known by his stage name GNL Zamba, was born on January 22, 1986, in the Mukono district. However, due to conflicting records and family traditions, his birthday is celebrated for an entire week, either starting on January 22 or January 29. Raised as the only boy among three sisters, Zamba’s childhood experiences in the Kawempe slum, following the Ugandan civil war, shaped him into a storyteller.
In addition to his music career, GNL Zamba is involved in various activities, serving as an ambassador for Ugandan brands and social projects. He has also ventured into acting and filmmaking.
Zamba’s educational journey was marked by changes, attending five different schools during A’ Levels. Engaging in various activities such as being the head writer for the Kiira Mirror, a member of the debates club team, and heading the junior literature club, he eventually earned a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Management from Makerere University.
As a hip hop artist, GNL Zamba, known for his Lugaflow style, incorporates both Luganda and English in his song lyrics to connect with a diverse audience. His participation in projects like HIP-HOP CANVAS, led by Shadrack Kuteesa of Platinum Entertainment, showcased his ability to tell compelling stories in Luganda, addressing social issues in Uganda.
In 2005, Zamba’s talent gained recognition when he participated in Hip Hop Canvas and contributed to the award-winning song “Mother Africa.” Subsequently, he released his first mainstream album, “Koyi Koyi,” in 2009. This album received acclaim for its fusion of traditional and modern sounds, establishing GNL Zamba as a significant force in the global hip hop scene. He has graced stages at festivals and conventions across Europe, Africa, and North America, further solidifying his influence in the music industry.
Yoweri Tibahuburwa Museveni, the president of Uganda, is said to have drawn inspiration from GNL, leading him to release his debut single, “You Want Another Rap.”
Initially signed by Platinum Entertainment, GNL Zamba ventured into entrepreneurship by establishing his own company, Baboon Forest Entertainment, in 2008. He diversified his investments by opening a sports bar and acquiring land in Uganda using the proceeds from his music career.
GNL Zamba, also known as Ernest Nsimbi, has been acclaimed with numerous awards, including the African Rapper of the Year in 2019 and Best Group at the 2013 Uganda Buzz Music Awards. His impact on society through the arts was recognized with the Twaweza initiative’s Arts Award in 2014.

Beyond music, GNL Zamba has actively participated in social campaigns, supporting causes such as wildlife conservation and AIDS education. He has collaborated with organizations like Reach A Hand Foundation Uganda to create campaigns that combine entertainment and education for young people.
The name “Baboon Forest” was inspired by GNL Zamba’s affinity for monkeys, especially large ones like apes and Rafiki from The Lion King. He associates monkeys with a Ugandan folk tale that credits them with helping people become kings, hence adopting the title “kingmaker” in Uganda’s hip hop scene.
Before adopting the name GNL Zamba, he initially called himself Zeus Theodore. GNL stands for “Greatness of No Limit,” while Zamba represents his actual botanical name.
Apart from his music career, GNL Zamba serves as the CEO of three different firms: Baboon Forest Entertainment, Eureka, and Zamba Investments.
