Elly Wamala, a highly regarded Ugandan singer, songwriter, and recording artist, is widely recognized as one of the greatest musicians in Uganda. Born on December 13, 1935, in Kampala, Uganda, Wamala began his musical journey at an early age, starting his career in 1952 at the National Theatre in Kampala.
Although he started singing in 1952, Wamala released his first single, titled “Nabutono,” in 1956. The song quickly became a massive hit throughout Uganda, catapulting Wamala to widespread popularity across the country. Throughout his career, Wamala amassed an impressive discography, estimated to include over 297 records across numerous albums. This extensive catalog is the largest among any musician in Uganda.
Among Wamala’s popular songs and albums are “Akana Ka Kawalya,” “Ani Yali Amanyi,” and “Tontunulila.” During the 1970s, Wamala reached the peak of his career, becoming the wealthiest musician in Uganda for the entire decade, with an estimated net worth of 36 million Ugandan shillings.
Elly Wamala’s musical contributions have left an indelible mark on Uganda’s music industry. His talent, prolific output, and financial success have solidified his position as an iconic figure in Ugandan music history.
Elly Wamala passed away on August 22, 2004, at the National Hospital Mulago after a courageous battle with throat cancer that had afflicted him since 2000, ultimately leading to his demise.
