Dre Cali, whose birth name is Stephen Andrew Katende, is a prominent Ugandan singer and songwriter celebrated for his reggae dancehall tracks. Born on February 23, 1995, in Entebbe, located in the central region of Uganda, he is the eldest of three sons in a Christian family. Dre Cali is affiliated with Mpaka Records, a major music label in East Africa founded by Ykee Benda.
Growing up in Wakiso, a district of Entebbe, Dre Cali completed his primary education at White Angels Primary School in 2007. He then pursued his O’ level at St. Henry’s College Kitovu in Masaka, graduating in 2011, followed by his high school education at Mengo Senior School in Bukesa, concluding in 2013.
Post-high school, Dre Cali enrolled at Uganda Christian University in Mukono, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering in 2019.
Although initially aspiring to be an athlete, Dre Cali ventured into music in 2015, securing a record deal with Mpaka Records early in his career. Demonstrating versatility, he excels in various music genres, including Afro beats, dancehall, RNB, and reggae.
His breakthrough came in 2019 with the release of “Zigi Zaga,” a reggae hit under the Mpaka label. Subsequently, he achieved success with singles such as “Onanagiza” featuring Lydia Jazmine, “Ebisooka n’ebisembayo,” “Efikuba,” “Singa Omanyi” with Weasel Manizo, and “Akayimba” with Myko Ouma.
Dre Cali has graced numerous events in Uganda and garnered nominations for various awards. As a well-established and beloved figure in Uganda’s music scene, he serves as an inspiration for aspiring musicians, particularly the youth aspiring to pursue careers in the music industry.
