Doctor Hilderman Mazongoto, known by his birth name Hillary Kiyaga, is a highly esteemed musician and a qualified medical practitioner from Uganda. He gained widespread recognition with his breakout hit “Double Bed Mazongoto,” which quickly became a local sensation.
Following the immense success of “Double Bed Mazongoto,” Hilderman continued to make waves in the music scene with several hit tracks such as “Campus Gal,” “Mr. Matama” featuring Henry Tigan, “Made in Uganda” alongside Leila Kayondo, “Kampe,” and “Amelia.” Impressively, he has maintained a spotless reputation in the industry, devoid of any conflicts or controversies with fellow artists.
Hilderman earned his stage moniker from the nickname “Hilary the man,” affectionately given to him by those who knew him well. Raised in Mpigi village, he later moved to the city to pursue his secondary education.
As the fifth child in a large family of eleven siblings, Hilderman attended various schools including Kampilingisa Primary School, St. Kalemba, Mityana Secondary School, and ultimately pursued a degree in Music, Dance, and Drama at Makerere University.
In addition to his medical and undergraduate music degrees, Hilderman furthered his education by obtaining a postgraduate degree in leadership and management from Strathmore, Nairobi University. Throughout his life, his passion for music has remained unwavering, as he fondly recalls, “Whenever I had music beats, I got excited.”
While still in school, Hilderman actively participated in several music groups. However, his true journey into the music industry began in 2002 during his first year at university. Although he released his initial single, it failed to gain significant traction due to the challenges of balancing academic commitments with musical pursuits. Reflecting on those times, he recalls the difficulty of managing classes during the day and recording or performing at night, leading him to temporarily put his musical aspirations on hold.
After completing his studies in 2006, Hilderman decided to dedicate himself fully to his music career. This decision proved fruitful when he achieved a major breakthrough with the release of “Double Bed Mazongoto.”
As his popularity soared, Hilderman’s presence in the music scene became increasingly prominent, garnering widespread recognition and appreciation.
Drawing inspiration from established artists like Bobi Wine and Silver Kyagulanyi, whom he had observed rise to fame, Hilderman was motivated to pursue his own musical journey. Interacting with numerous celebrities at music, drama, and dance events fueled his determination to excel in the industry.
Beyond his music career, Hilderman enjoys socializing with friends at house parties and drink-ups, indulging in his favorite dish “nyama kyomo” (barbecued meat), and watching drama or investigative movies. An avid sports enthusiast, basketball holds a special place in his heart, where he excels in both goalkeeping and volleyball.
A devout Catholic, Hilderman is married to Cissy Namuddu, his longtime partner, with whom he shares two children. Despite his success in music, he maintains a distance from politics, considering it a “dirty game.” However, he contemplates engaging in politics to practice rather than merely preach, emphasizing the importance of democracy in such endeavors.
While music has brought immense fulfillment to Hilderman’s life, it also presents challenges, particularly in the face of stiff competition and financial constraints exacerbated by poor copyright laws. He firmly believes that addressing these challenges is crucial for Ugandan music to make a mark on the global stage.
Looking ahead, Hilderman is driven by ambitious plans to nurture young talent and establish a professional band dedicated to live music performances. He emphasizes the importance of originality for aspiring artists, stressing that a unique identity is essential for success in the music industry.
Currently, Hilderman is actively working on a 10-track album, with recent endeavors including the video launch for the title track “Do as I Say” at Club Amnesia on June 28.
