Desire Luzinda, a Ugandan singer, has faced numerous challenges throughout her life and career. Despite not possessing a vocal prowess comparable to other divas, her fame soared due to her voluptuous physique, particularly her well-known curves, capturing the attention of many admirers in Kampala.
The singer gained notoriety for the wrong reasons when intimate photos of her surfaced, leading to the adoption of the name “Desire Owekitone.” Known for songs like “Kittone,” “Ebyama,” and “Gwenafunye,” Luzinda’s life journey unfolds against a backdrop of controversies and triumphs.
Born Rachel Luzinda on August 15, 1980, to Jamada Luzinda and Imelda Luzinda, Desire grew up in Ibanda, raised in a Muslim family that later embraced Christianity. Her father, a teacher at King’s College Buddo, and her mother, an agriculturalist in Ankole, shaped her upbringing alongside six siblings.
Desire’s educational path took her from Buganda Road for grades one to seven, Omega College, and Makerere High School for A-levels. After an initial stint at Makerere University studying Development Studies, she dropped out but later resumed at Nkozi University. However, she eventually left and embarked on a tour to the UK.
Originally named Nancy, Desire changed her name to Desire, which she adopted as her stage name. She faced challenges during her senior year, becoming pregnant and giving birth to a daughter named Mitchell. Despite her mother’s aspirations for her to become a lawyer, Desire struggled to focus on law school and did not pursue it.
Desire Luzinda’s music career started at Fenon records, where she recorded her debut song, “Nakowa Emikwano,” in 2006. Notably, her breakthrough came in 2007 with the hit song “Mubiite,” leading to several awards and nominations. Collaborations with artists like Late Mowzey Radio and Weasel followed, but her shift towards gospel music marked a significant change in her musical direction.
Beyond her music career, Desire also ventured into the media as a radio and TV host. She worked at WBS TV and later at Dembe FM. Awards, including the PAM Awards and Abryanz Style and Fashion Awards, recognized her contributions to the industry.
Desire’s personal life involved a relationship with Michael Kaddu, resulting in a daughter, Mitchell Kaddu, born in 2004. Controversies surrounded her, including disputes about her daughter’s paternity and scandals involving prominent figures in Kampala.
In 2014, her Nigerian boyfriend, Franklin, posted explicit photos of her online, leading to legal actions. Desire turned this adversity into an opportunity to raise awareness about cyberbullying through her campaigns.
