Priscilla Zawedde, known professionally as Azawi, is a Ugandan singer, songwriter, and dancer signed by Swangz Avenue in 2019. Specializing in Afrobeats, she has the distinction of being the first female Ugandan artist featured on billboards in New York’s Times Square and Los Angeles.
Born on February 2, 1996, in Kampala to the late Walusimbi Samuel and Nakamatte Mary, Azawi attended Buganda Road Primary and later Mother Kevin Primary School in Mukono for her early education. She continued her academic journey at St Henry’s College in Ggangu Masajja, Lubiri Secondary School, London College in Nansana, and St Janani Luwum Secondary School for A-levels. Eventually, she earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Makerere University.
Azawi’s artistic journey began in 2005 as a dancer with the Kika Dance Troupe, later joining the Crane Performers. However, realizing the impact on her studies, she stopped dancing but performed twice in China with her troupe. In 2011, she started writing songs as a hobby, later turning it into a source of income after her father’s death in 2012. Azawi’s songwriting skills led her to work with various artists, including Nina Rose, Lydia Jazmine, Carol Nantongo, Vinka, and Eddy Kenzo.
Joining a band in 2015 while also working as a waiter, Azawi decided to pursue music seriously. In August 2019, she walked into Swangz Avenue with the intention of selling a song but was offered a record deal instead. Her breakthrough came in January 2020 with the release of her first single, “Quinamino.”
Under Swangz Avenue, Azawi has released numerous songs and two albums, “Lo Fit” in 2020 and “African Music” in 2021. She has received several accolades, including Female Artist of the Year at the Janzi Awards 2021 and Artist of the Year at the Buzz Teeniez Awards 2021.
Azawi’s achievements extend beyond music, as she serves as a Guinness brand ambassador and achieved the distinction of featuring on billboards in New York and Los Angeles’ Times Square in 2021. This marked her as the first female and third Ugandan artist to achieve this recognition, following Eddy Kenzo and Bobi Wine.
