Family Background and Transition to Canada
The family of Esther and Ezekiel, led by their mother Julie Muteesasira, is deeply rooted in the world of music. Julie, a renowned gospel singer in Uganda, has produced hits like “Ekikunyumira,” “Lwana Nabo,” and “Nterekera.” The siblings attribute their musical journey to the influence of their talented mother. In an interview on Kenya’s Citizen TV, Ezekiel shared that he ventured into music by observing and emulating his mother’s musical pursuits. Esther, on the other hand, recounted how her aunt discovered her singing talent by secretly recording her around the house.
Aside from their musical endeavors, Esther and Ezekiel actively engage in charitable activities alongside their parents. Following their victory in a competition, they expressed their commitment to building a home for homeless children during an interview with New Vision. However, their family dynamics underwent a significant change when their mother went through a divorce and came out as gay. After spending five years apart, Esther and Ezekiel relocated to Canada to live with their mother.
East Africa’s Got Talent Journey
The siblings’ entry into the limelight occurred in 2017 when their aunt learned about their singing abilities and submitted their audition tape for “East Africa’s Got Talent.” Their impressive rendition of Alexandra Burke’s “Hallelujah” at the theater auditions resonated with all four judges, propelling them into the live shows. Despite not making it to the finals based on public votes, the judges, including Gaetano Kagwa, Makeda, and Jeff Koinange, chose them to advance. In their final performance, Esther and Ezekiel captivated the audience with “When You Believe” by Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey, securing their victory with the most votes. They received a cash prize of US$50,000 (Ugs184 million) and a congratulatory message from President Yoweri Museveni, who affectionately referred to them as his grandchildren (bazukulu).
Canada’s Got Talent Endeavor
After relocating to Canada, Esther and Ezekiel continued to showcase their talent on “Canada’s Got Talent” season 2. Their performance garnered a standing ovation from both the audience and judges, propelling them to the next round in the competition.
