Richard Kasendwa, known by the stage name Ziza Bafana, is a highly talented artist, songwriter, and guitarist hailing from Uganda. Renowned for his captivating performances and expertise in the raga dancehall genre, Ziza Bafana has earned a reputation for bringing down the house.
The name “Ziza Bafana” carries significant meanings. In the Bible, Ziza is Shiphi’s son, while in Rwanda, it symbolizes someone who can assist the president. The term “Bafana” is derived from the South African football team, Bafana Bafana, translating to “strong youths,” a descriptor that Ziza Bafana finds fitting for himself.
Born in 1988 in Luvule Village, Masaka District, Ziza Bafana faced challenging circumstances after losing his parents at the age of 9. Leaving his village for Kampala, he embarked on an educational journey that led him through Bulenge Primary School, Kyebando Primary School, and St. Stephen’s Kyebando Secondary School. Financial constraints forced him to discontinue his education during the third year of high school.
Ziza Bafana’s introduction to the music scene was rooted in his involvement with the church, where he sang in the choir and played the guitar. Prior to his music career, he engaged in motorcycle repair, farming, and car maintenance under the guidance of his uncle in Masaka City.
Ziza Bafana officially ventured into music in 2011, demonstrating a unique dancehall style often flavored with a Jamaican accent. His breakout hit, “Jayo Ntekeyo,” propelled him into the limelight, and he has since become a globetrotter, performing in various countries.
Despite facing controversies and clashes, Ziza Bafana remains committed to his artistry. Notable achievements include winning Zzina Awards and HiPiPo Awards, earning the Rising Star Award twice, and serving as the MTN Smart Series brand ambassador in 2015.
Ziza Bafana, a devout Christian, has experienced changes in his personal life, including a past marriage to Vanessa, the mother of his first child, and his current relationship with Irene, with whom he has another child. His story is one of resilience, talent, and a relentless pursuit of musical success.
